Why Our Mothers Didn’t Talk About Vaginal Health—And Why We Must

As Mother’s Day draws near, I'm not just thinking about flowers or phone calls—I'm thinking about the conversations I never had. I grew up in a home where vaginal health was never discussed. Where pads were passed like contraband, and periods came with shame instead of support. When I got my first yeast infection at 12, I didn’t receive comfort or clarity—I got blame. No doctor. No guidance. Just silence. My stepmom told me it was because of my clothes or hygiene. She didn’t take me to a doctor or even offer a remedy. She was emotionally withdrawn. And talking to my dad about my vagina? Not an option. So I scratched in silence for weeks, internalized every shaming comment and started to believe something was wrong with me.

Why Vaginal Health Was a Taboo in Our Homes

Our moms, aunties, and grandmothers were warriors but they were also women of their times. They lived through decades where:

  • Periods were taboo
  • Sex wasn’t discussed unless it was for marriage
  • Vaginal issues were whispered about or ignore

That silence trickled down. And we paid the price in confusion, shame, and Google searches that led us to risky DIY remedies instead of real answers. Raise your hand if the DIY era of vaginal confusion has ever made you google:

  • “Why does my vagina itch?”
  • “Can I treat BV at home?”
  • “Natural remedies for yeast infections”

Same, sis. In high school, I was a varsity swimmer and tennis player and I dealt with recurring infections. By college, I had BV for three months before I even knew what BV was. I tried garlic. Yogurt. Apple cider vinegar (ouch). I was desperate, but more than that, I was uninformed

It wasn’t until my cousin—a nurse—had a compassionate, shame-free conversation with me about vaginal health that things started to shift. That talk gave me answers, relief, and most importantly—power. It also lit a fire in me. So when I created the V Vitamins, I made a decision to be the woman I needed when I was younger. To speak honestly about my struggles with BV, yeast infections, shame, and silence. It was scary. But it was freeing. And it’s helped thousands of women feel less alone and more in control of their intimate health.

Myth: Your vagina should smell like flowers.

Truth: Vaginas have a natural scent. Fragrance-packed products often do more harm than good.

Myth: You need to douche your vagina to stay clean.

Truth: Your vagina is self-cleaning. Douching is dangerous, can disrupt your healthy bacteria, and cause an imbalance (click here to learn more)

Myth: Vaginal infections like BV and yeast infections “just happen.”

Truth: Recurring vaginal infections often signal a deeper imbalance. There are natural, preventative solutions available.
